Beginners Guide to Smoking Weed- Everything You Need to Know

With weed as popular as it has ever been, more people are picking up a joint than ever before. Everyone has to start somewhere though, and for those of you just starting or thinking about starting, you’ve come to the right place.

Marijuana can be a wonderful treat with many benefits, but it’s important to be educated so you can enjoy it to the fullest. Coming in to the world of weed can be confusing, with so many strains, smoking devices, vaporizers and tons more, it’s a lot to take in!

Were going to take it slowly, and after this you will undoubtedly be ready to light up, as well as hold your own in any conversation your stoner friends are having about weed.

Strain Types

One thing that you’ll learn very quickly is that not all weed is the same. There are different types of strains, all with their own look, smell, taste and effect. The two main classifications of cannabis plants that you will typically see are cannabis indica and cannabis sativa.

Indica strains: Indica weed strains are typically going to give you a body high, making your body feel relaxed and amazing. “In-da-couch” is a common way to remember that indicas give you a body high, as you will be stuck on the couch all night! These strains are really effective for pain relief and helping you go to sleep.

Sativa Strains: Sativa weed strains are going to give you a cerebral high, sparking your creativity and imagination, and even possibly giving you an energy boost. There are some sativa strains that give me the same type of energy I get when I drink a cup of coffee. Sativa strains are especially good for those suffering from anxiety and depression.

Hybrid Strains: Hybrid strains are a combination of sativa and indica strains. Some hybrid strains can be sativa dominant, meaning you’ll feel more of the cerebral high with a little body high in there. Others are Indica dominant, so you’re going to feel more of that”couch lock” but with a little cerebral buzz most likely. There are also some hybrid strains that are “even”, that will give you a nice blend of mind and body high. To give you guys a reference, “Khalifa Kush”, Wiz Khalifa’s weed strain which he often raps about, is a hybrid strain!

Smoking Weed For The First Time

Amazing

Smoking weed for the first time can be a wonderful experience, opening your eyes to all the good feelings’ marijuana can bring. My advice is to try to take it easy on your first time though, stay away from the bong rips and dab rigs, as they can be very intense and not for beginners. Instead, I would recommend taking a few hits out of a vaporizer, or possibly even share a joint or a blunt with a friend and take a few hits. The point is it’s not going to take much to get you high, and yes it actually is possible to get too high, especially on your first time. Getting too high could cause you to be really paranoid, or in rare cases even “Green out” which is where you actually vomit from consuming too much cannabis.

As far as what to expect from getting high for the first time, you could feel a variety of things. Feelings of euphoria, creativity, relaxation, sleepiness, or possibly all of them at the same time. And don’t forget, you’ll probably get the “munchies” too, so be prepared to go tear through your refrigerator like a wild animal. You might even get a case of the giggles too, which comes from the euphoria feeling.

For first timers and people who don’t smoke very much in general, your high could last anywhere from 3-4 hours, depending on the quality of your herb and how much you smoked. This goes down to about 1-2 hours or those who smoke regularly, as the body builds up a tolerance after a while.

Equipment

You certainly don’t need any equipment to smoke weed, but man is there a lot of it in the cannabis world. Sure everybody knows what rolling papers and pipes are, but when you start throwing around words like bong, bubbler and vaporizer than things can get a little confusing.

To keep things simple, a bong is essentially a water pipe, that uses water to filter and cool the smoke, delivering cool and smooth hits. A bubbler is similar, except much smaller and more travel friendly usually. Bongs can come in many shapes and sizes, which is one of the reasons I said bongs can be intense early on. Trying to clear some of the really tall bongs out can deliver lung-busting rips, so as a beginner be careful, bongs are great, but work your way up to them!

Vaporizers are a huge part of the cannabis world today, and many people swear by them. Vaporizers are certainly healthier, and deliver a clear-headed high while getting the most out of your herb. Since your herb is never combusted in a vaporizer, it eliminates all the carcinogens and hot smoke which can be harmful to your lungs. Admittedly it is not as intense of a high as if you were to smoke, but It’s still great nonetheless. Getting Weed

Depending on where you live, getting weed could be very easy for you. If you are lucky enough to live in a region where recreational weed is legal, than you can go purchase weed at any dispensary as long as you’re 21+ (18+ in Canada). If it’s not legal for recreational use in your state or region, the good news is it most likely is legal for medicinal use. Getting a medical marijuana card isn’t as difficult as some might think either, in some states you won’t even have to leave your house to get it.

“How much should I buy”? is a common newbie question, and a very understandable one at that. If you’re at a dispensary, I’d suggest buying one or two pre-rolled joints, than test them out and see if you like it, than go back for more. For those of you just starting out, I’d say get anywhere from an eighth of an ounce to a quarter of an ounce. That’ll typically be enough so you can smoke at least once a day for about 1-2 weeks.

I hope that those of you who came in here as beginners got a lot of your questions answered, but if not please do leave them in the comments below and I’ll be sure to get to them as soon as possible.
