Best Grinder For Marijuana- Top picks of 2018

With the full-blown legalization in Canada, and laws regarding Marijuana loosening elsewhere around the world, more people can get their hands on weed now then ever. However, I see many people failing to utilize grinders, which is puzzling to me because a grinder makes smoking a helluva lot easier (and more enjoyable in my opinion). Now I’m not going to be that guy who tries to tell you that grinding your weed will make it significantly more potent, because that’s not true. If at the end of all this you still want to break up your bud with your fingers then go right ahead!

Why Should I Use a Grinder?

There are many things that make using a grinder worth it, for starters, convenience!!!! All you need to do is toss a nug in the grinder (you can remove the stem first if you want, not required though) and that’s basically it. Your herb will then be finely grounded up and ready to use however you please. It’s pretty hard to get nicely grounded weed when breaking weed up with your fingers, but if you can manage to, there’s still no way it’s faster than a grinder ;).

A grinder can also act as a mini storage for your herb! Many times I’ve tossed a few nugs in the grinder so I’d have a full grinder of weed, then head off to a party or social gathering. It’s convenient because grinders are fairly small, so you don’t have to worry about carrying around a bag or jar for your herb. And when you’re ready to smoke, your herb is already all ground up and ready to go. While everyone else is breaking up their weed with their hands, you can take this chance to take the first bong rip ;).

You will also conserve weed when using a grinder. Ground up weed has a larger surface area then nugs, and when you burn it will burn more evenly, allowing for more hits.

Not to mention keef, which you can’t utilize at all without a grinder. For those of you that don’t know what keef is, it is the trichomes that are left behind and that get sifted through a mesh screen. This looks just like really finely ground marijuana, and it usually contains a much higher concentration of cannabinoids (such as THC).

Different Types Of Grinders

2 Piece: A two piece will typically be the cheapest type of grinder, and only contains two pieces, both of which have teeth for grinding. These grinders will work at grinding up your herb, but it can be tough to try to pick out all of your herb from between the teeth. However, they are very small, which makes them extremely convenient!

2-piece grinder

3 Piece: A 3 piece grinder will act just as a 2 piece grinder, except there is a compartment below for your herb to fall into, so you won’t have to worry as much about picking bud out of the teeth.

4 Piece: A four piece has a compartment for your herb as well as a keef catcher, hence the 4 parts. If keef is something that is important to you, you’re going to want a four piece grinder!!

4-part grinder

Electric: Works by using electricity to power a motor that grinds your herb. These are a nice idea, but in most cases these are slow and have a hard time grinding through some buds.

And as far as what material to go for, I would recommend the sturdier metal materials such as aluminum and titanium. Aluminum is the most common, however many people feel that aluminum grinders can be harmful to your herb, however this isn’t true. If you’re buying an aluminum grinder from a reputable place you should have no problems concerning safety. You could also opt for a wood or acrylic/plastic, however both of these materials will deteriorate much quicker, and in general they might not grind herb as well. Aluminum and titanium grinders tend to have the sharpest, most long-lasting teeth that will grind your herb extremely well and last for years.

G-Spot 2 Piece Aluminum Herb Grinder ($19.99)

G-Spot 2 piece herb grinderG-Spot 2 piece herb grinder

When it comes to portability you can’t really beat this grinder. It is very slim and only has a diameter of 62 mm, and comes in your choice of black or silver. This grinder also features a magnetized lid and diamond shaped teeth, which are extremely good for tearing through herb. You’ll also find that you can get a really fine grind using this, so its great for vaporizers that require a very fine grind!

The good thing about the teeth on this grinder is that they aren’t going to wear down quickly, you can easily get 5+ years of usage out of this thing. There’s no need to worry about this thing breaking either, it is extremely durable and can handle just about anything.

Santa Cruz Shredder ($29.95)

Santa Cruz shredder

The Santa Cruz Shredder is another fantastic 2 piece grinder, and is one of the best on the market. The Santa Cruz shredder is the same exact size as the G-Spot grinder listed above, so you shouldn’t have any problem regarding portability. The Santa Cruz Shredder is made using medical-grade anodized aluminum, and has a very innovative tooth design that is very efficient at grinding your herbs. Using this grinder is very easy, and you’ll find that it gets through even the most dense nugs with ease!

This grinder also comes in 6 different colors, black, grey, red, pink, silver and green, all of which look very sleek and stylish. Once again with such a well-built 2 piece grinder you will have absolutely no problems with durability, whether you drop it, step on it, or run it over with your car this thing will not break on you. You’ll also notice you can get a very fine grind with this as well, making it great for vaporizers.

Compton Grinders 2 Part Herb Grinder ($34.99)

Compton Grinders 2 piece grinderCompton Grinders 2 pice grinder

Compton Grinders makes extremely high quality, durable grinders, and this 2 part grinder is certainly no exception. This grinder is 2.5 inches (62mm) in diameter, so it’s portability is phenomenal. This grinder is made using aircraft-grade aluminum, so it’s safe to say you shouldn’t worry about breaking this thing. Compton Grinders also uses an anodized finish, which makes there grinders much more resistant to corrosion. You also have your choice of black, blue, purple, and metal gray when you purchase!

This grinder features diamond shaped teeth that are very sharp, you should have no problems shredding through even the toughest buds. There is also an earth neodymium magnet that keeps this thing closed, which is reportedly the strongest type of magnet on the market! This is nice because sometimes grinders use pour magnets, so if you drop your grinder the top can come off in some cases, which could cause you to lose your herb. It’s happened to me many times, and believe me it is a horrible feeling.

One of my favorite things about this grinder is the ridges on the top and bottom of the grinder, they provide great grip and make it very easy to grind your herb.

Kannastor 4-Part Grinder($55.20)

Kannastor 4 part grinder Kannastor 4 part grinder

Kannastor makes all kinds of different marijuana grinders, but this 4-piece grinder of theirs is by far my favorite. This grinder is a 4-piece, so it may not be as portable as a two piece grinder, but that is expected. The diameter remains fairly small, at 2.5in, but this grinder is fairly tall, and does have some weight to it since it is made of high quality aluminum.

As you can see this grinder features a clear top and is also clear on the side, so you can see your weed from the second you drop it in all the way until it falls into the storage compartment. The teeth are razor sharp, and when you combine that with the excellent grip, grinding with this grinder is fun and easy. The storage compartment is also very large, meaning you have enough room to store some herb for later as well.

Something else I think is pretty cool about this grinder is that in the keef catcher they give you an actual guitar pick to use to scoop out keef and scrape around the edges!

EHLE. Large 4-Part Grinder ($59.99)

EHLE. 4- part grinder EHLE. 4-part grinder

This 4-part grinder comes in at a little larger, having a 3 in diameter, which is still very portable. EHLE used zinc when making this, so it is very sturdy, and should easily last for 5+ years.

This grinder has a very unique teeth design, however they are very sharp and tear through herb like its nothing. As you can see there are also 2 cutouts on the lid of the grinder, which are advertised to be for holding your papers and herb. While this is a very cool feature, I don’t think most people want to risk storing there herb on top of their grinder. What I find useful about the cutouts is that they are phenomenal for grip which is extremely nice when you’re grinding a lot of herb.

One thing that I personally don’t like about this grinder is that it’s storage compartment isn’t very deep. This isn’t a terribly big deal, but I tend to grind a lot of weed at a time and store it for later so I don’t have to keep grinding throughout the day.

SLX Non-Stick 4-Part Grinder ($63.99)

SLX grinderSLX grinder

This Grinder is a BEAST. At 2.5 inches in diameter, it is one of the largest grinders on this list, but at the same time it is still super compact and easy to take on the go. You have an option of 6 extremely stylish colors when you buy, black, champagne gold, charcoal, purple, silver, and yellow, so it’s safe to say there’s a color for everyone!

One of the best things about this grinder is its SAFE non-stick ceramic coating that is on both the inside and outside of the grinder. This is a lifesaver because cleaning out a grinder is not fun, and with this grinder you will hardly, if ever, have to do it. The keef catcher on the bottom even has a pollen screen that can be easily removed and wiped down if it happens to get clogged, which won’t happen much as it’s a very high quality screen.

The teeth design is unique but effective, and with the nice grip this thing has, grinding is always quick and easy. Overall, this is a grinder that will basically last you until you lose it, because it will not break.

Chewy Electric Grinder ($29.43)

Usually I steer clear from electric grinders, because like I said, most of them don’t work very well or are just inefficient. But the Chewy Electric grinder is one of the few exceptions, and at only $30 you get a lot for your money! Portability is usually a huge problem with electric grinders, and it makes sense, you have to find room for a battery and a motor. However, this particular grinder is actually very portable. It may not be as easy to carry around as a 2-piece grinder, but if people can manage to walk around with an iPhone X+ in their pocket, then they can walk around with this.

The Chewy uses a 9 volt battery and also has 9 hours of battery life, which I think is plenty, I mean how long do you really spend grinding herb anyways? Loading the Chewy is extremely easy and the grinding actually works very well which is rare for electric weed grinders! Something I really like about the Chewy is that you can dispense your weed with the click of a button, which is extremely nice when rolling a joint/blunt, or when you’re simply trying to load a bowl or vaporizer.

Also, this device isn’t going to stick out like a sore thumb if you want to use it when you’re out and about. Some designs of electric herb grinders are just ridiculous, making it so you could never take them anywhere.

If an electric grinder is something that interests you, the Chewy is a great option!

I hope I’ve helped you find a grinder that is perfect for your needs! Have you used any of the grinders on this list before? Let me know what you think in the comments below! Good info! I’ve only ever used a grinder on pipe tobacco, but I wish I had this info years ago. Would have saved me a lot of time breaking up buds by hand/ with scissors. Unfortunately, my line of work does not make use of cannabinoids a realistic option, but I’ll keep this in mind for when my contract is up.

    Hi Joey!

Wow those grinders, I somehow feel super excited whenever I come to your site maybe because there’s just so many ways to enjoy marijuana better here. I’m having trouble choosing between the G-Spot 2-piece and Santa Cruz, what’s the difference between the two besides the price range? Titanium sounds so rad!! 😀

    • Joey says:

Hey Riaz, thanks for the kind words!

The G-Spot and Santa Cruz are both excellent grinders, and I’d say the biggest differences between the two is that the Santa Cruz has a better build quality and has a more unique tooth design. The G-Spot features standard diamond shaped teeth while the Santa Cruz uses a completely unique tooth design that is more efficient!

I hope I answered your question, have a great day!

I think conserving marijuana will be a big up side to the grinder since the price of weed is so high. It sounds like the aluminum and titanium grinders are the way to go. The four piece grinder sounds like it would be the best option for everything that it does.

How much will the four piece grinders grind and hold?

    Hi Joey,

I love seeing the best grinders the cannabis buds.

The idea is to prepare the herb without losing the potency of cannabinoids.

I like the 4 pieces grinders, what would be the useful life? What would be the best material to store the herb?

Hey CJ, thanks for the reply!

4-piece grinders are fantastic I must agree, and as for the useful life, that could depend on multiple external factors such as light, temperature, etc. so its hard to give an exact life. However I will add that a grinder is by no means long-term storage. To be safe, I wouldn’t leave ground herb in a grinder for more than a week!
