How to Grind Weed Without a Grinder- 5 Easy Methods

Picture this, you’re sitting in the car with your buddies after picking up a fresh bag of bud, you’re about to roll a joint when you realize nobody remembered a grinder. This is a frustrating situation that I and many others have been through countless times. The good news is that there are multiple ways you can grind weed without a grinder!! However, a grinder is the most efficient way to grind your herb, so if you don’t have a grinder, or aren’t sure what a grinder is, feel free to check out my article on grinders.

(Check out this video if you want a quick recap on how to grind weed without a grinder! This video wasn’t made by me, it was made by a channel called Loaded Up, which I have been a fan of for some time now. This video does not include all the methods listed in this article, so if you want all of my tips continue reading until the end!!)

Now lets get straight into 5 easy ways to grind weed without a grinder!

The Classic Hand Grind

the hand grind

This one is a no-brainer, the classic breaking up of buds with your fingers is a practice that is loved by many, but also hated by many. Some people love that it is a completely cost free method, all you need is your own two hands. For others, breaking up weed with your fingers may feel like a waste of time, especially when there are ways to get it done much quicker. However, when faced with no other options, the classic hand grind is something that will always be there for you!

One reason many people hate breaking up weed with their hands is that often times, they don’t even do it the right way. Those of you who break up bud with your hands regularly understand that it can be a bit of an acquired skill, and as you practice you will get better and better at it. I’ve seen people that exclusively use their hands to break up buds, and they’ve been doing it for years, and you would not believe how fast they can break up buds with their fingers. Most people want to just pull random chunks off of the bud, toss them in the bowl and call it a day, but if you want it to burn evenly, its going to take a little more than that.

A good way to break up bud with your hands that doesn’t even require using your fingers is to hold your hand out flat and rub the bud up and down your hand. The friction from moving the bud up and down will cause the bud to break apart, creating a nice little grind that is fairly similar to a grinder.

Scissors And Cup Method

scissors and cup method

Before I used a grinder consistently, this was my go-to method to grind up my herb. I like this method because its always easy to find a cup and scissors lying around, and once you’re done grinding the herb its in a nice handy cup that you can pour straight into a bowl, joint, etc.

I’m sure you guys can see where I’m going with this method as well, all you need to do is put your bud into a cup and start chopping away with the scissors. With this method you have the freedom to grind your herb a much as you desire as well. If you don’t want a very fine grind, simply don’t chop it too much, but if you do want a fine grind, then chop away!!

One tip I recommend to make it easier for you is to use a small cup! If you use a bigger cup everything will get spread out and it will be harder to grind, whereas in a small cup your herb can’t really move around too much, making it easy to cut. I like to use a clear shot glass or a small glass jar when I use this method, I think its important that the cup is see through as well, that way you can see what you’re doing.

Just as a heads up, if you do use this method, your scissors will have a very strong marijuana odor on them, so be aware of that, and if you need to wash them off then be sure to do so!

Container and Coin Method

coin and cup method

The container and coin method is something I haven’t been aware of for very long, which is unfortunate, because it actually works extremely well. When I don’t have a grinder on me, this is one of my favorite methods to use now, because it actually works super well.

All you need is a container with a lid and any coin of your choice and you’re good to go. I usually use a quarter, because its usually the easiest to find and they have some weight to them, which helps break through the bud. For my container I usually use an old pill bottle, or any small container with a lid I can find lying around. Be sure to wash your container and coin before you do this, and then the rest is simple.

Toss your coin and your bud into the container, put the lid on, and then shake away!! After about 30 seconds to a minute, you should have a very nice grind, but if not feel free to keep shaking it. I also like this method because like I mentioned earlier, its nice to be able to pour your herb straight out afterwards instead of having to pick it up with your fingers.

The Knife Method

knife

Once again, this method is fairly self-explanatory, yet also very effective. For this method, you’re going to want to go out and find any knife that you feel is strong enough to easily chop through buds. Most knives will work in this scenario, believe me I’ve used almost every type of knife you can think of to chop herb at one point or another. However, if you’re trying to use some crappy plastic knife you got from the food court at the mall then yeah you’re going to run into some problems.

Once you’ve got your knife and bud ready, let your inner chef out and chop that herb like you would carrots for a soup. This method is super quick and easy, and allows you to grind your herb as finely as you want, however most people don’t carry knives on them, so this method might now always be reliable.

And this goes without saying, but be careful with knives!!!! A bunch of stoners with knives is never a good idea, but sometimes you need one to get the job done!!

Coffee Grinder/Blender

Out of all the methods on this list, this is the one I have used the least, but some people like it, and hey, it works! Coffee grinders and blenders both have blades that are meant for grinding things up, and while they may not be meant for weed, they will certainly do the job still.

I prefer not to use this method for the simple fact that after you use either a coffee grinder or a blender to grind your herb, you will need to put it through a thorough cleaning afterwards to get the weed/weed smell out of it. As far as functionality though, coffee grinders and blenders can tear through herb like its nothing, so you’re going to get a very fine grind every time. Some of the blades on powerful blenders are very large and very sharp, so grinding your herb too much could actually be an issue, so be careful and make sure you’re not grinding your herb into dust!

Therefore, a coffee grinder/blender may not be an everyday grinding device, but it can get the job done if it need to!

I hope this has helped to shed some light on what you can do if you find yourself in a situation without a grinder!! I would love to know how they worked out for you, let me know down in the comments!!!
